Lord of the Loo

In a small town called Douglasville, GA there is a gas station where I visited the bathroom for the first time this week. This photo was hanging on the wall in front of the urinal. Why do so many artists make Jesus look like a late 60′s deaf pedophile? And while we’re on the subject, what’s with the heart thing? Anyway, enjoy. Your friend, me.

I agree with you about the look…
Actually, this type of image is even hanging on the wood-covered wall of our chalet old sleeping room. My grand-parents obviously bought it in the 1930s. The Virgin Mary and Jesus are staring right into our eyes whereever you stand in the room; no risk to forget their “loving” surveillance!
Anyway, the idea of the ‘sacred heart’ must be very old. It is certainly an effort to symbolise Jesus’s glowingly loving and suffering heart. Do you know the Basilique Sacré-Coeur (Basilica of the Sacred Heart)’? It’s a famous church in Paris:

After some research:

Religious imagery depicting the Sacred Heart is frequently featured in Roman Catholic, and sometimes Anglican and Lutheran homes.
The Blessed Mary of the Divine Heart (1863–1899)was a nun from Sisters of the Good Shepherd Congregation who requested, in the name of Christ Himself, to Pope Leo XIII that he consecrate the entire World to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
The Sacred Heart (…) appears on the Miraculous Medal. On the Miraculous Medal, the Sacred Heart is crowned with thorns. The Immaculate Heart of Mary also appears on the medal, next to the Sacred Heart, but is pierced by a sword, rather than being crowned with thorns. The M on the medal signifies the Blessed Virgin at the foot of the Cross when Jesus was being crucified.
